The origins of Planters can be traced back to a young Italian immigrant named Amedeo Obici, who had a vision that would eventually grow into the world's grandest nut company. In 1906, Obici, along with his friend and business partner Mario Peruzzi, founded the Planters Peanut Company in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Seven years later, Obici built the company's first processing plant in Suffolk, Virginia. The iconic Mr. Peanut character was introduced in 1916, following a contest won by a schoolboy named Antonio Gentile, whose sketch was later enhanced by a commercial artist.

Planters' first advertisement, which appeared in the Saturday Evening Post in 1918, was also the first for a salted nut. The company's hugely popular dry-roasted peanuts debuted in 1962, and subsequent introductions have included unsalted and roasted peanuts, Planters Trail Mix, Honey-Roasted Peanuts and Cashew Mix, and more recently, NUTrition.

Planters is part of the Kraft family of brands, which has a rich history dating back to 1765 in Dorchester, Massachusetts, where a local physician, Dr. James Baker, partnered with a young Irish chocolate-maker, John Hannon, to establish America's first chocolate mill. Over the years, many companies have joined Kraft Foods, contributing to its growth and the creation of some of the most popular and well-known brands, including Maxwell House, Yuban, Oscar Mayer, Breakstone, Grape-Nuts, Jell-O, Post, Minute Rice, Cheez Whiz, Cracker Barrel, Tang, and Cool Whip, among others.
